Liverpool wait on Sturridge fitness

The 24-year old, who already has five goals for the Reds this season, was ruled out of England's World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Ukraine after he suffered a thigh strain during the 1-0 home win over Manchester United.

Despite being labelled as 'touch and go' for the trip to Kiev, he was officially ruled out at the weekend and he subsequently returned to Melwood to undergo treatment with the Liverpool club doctors.

His return will be a major boost to manager Brendan Rogers as the forward is the only one to have found the net in the Premier League so far this campaign.

Meanwhile, there are pessimistic rumours circulating that defender Glen Johnson could be out for up to ten weeks with an ankle injury.

Johnson also limped off during the victory over United eight days ago, but his prognosis looks a lot worse and it is feared that he may not return until early November.

If that is the case, he could miss the remainder of England's World Cup qualifying campaign as well as a trip to Old Trafford in the Capital One Cup and the first Merseyside derby of the season.

Liverpool have however refused to confirm the stories and the club's medical staff are reportedly still assessing the full extent of the injury.

Johnson was an integral part of Rogers' team last season, starting 50 games in all competitions.
