The American singer's latest release, "Roar", already a number one
hit in the United States, stopped Ellie Goulding's three-week domination
of the British charts by knocking "Burn" off the top spot.
"Roar" sold 179,500 copies the last week, making it the third fastest-selling single of the year, according to the Official Charts Company.
Perry, whose previous hits include "Firework" and "I Kissed a Girl", said in a statement: "I love the UK. The UK is so ahead of the zeitgeist. They are the zeitgeist. The UK is where a lot of music trends start."
Elsewhere in the top ten, Swedish DJ Avicii slipped one place to number three with "Wake Me Up".
The original Sugababes line-up of Siobhan Donaghy, Mutya Buena and Keisha Buchana failed to make the top 40 with their come-back single "Flatline".
Indie-rock band The 1975 took the number one position in the album chart with their self-titled new release.
The Manchester-based band knocked American rockers Avenged Sevenfold's Hail To The King off the top spot. They also saw off a challenge from Nine Inch Nails' new album Hesitation Marks. Hip hop duo Rizzle Kicks' Roaring 20s was a new entry at number three.
There was another new entry from Pete Doherty's Babyshambles whose first album in six years, Sequel To The Prequel, entered at number 10.
