City can progress to the Champions League final - Aguero

The Argentine international has seen his side fail to progress from the group stages during the last two campaigns, however Aguero believes City are in with a chance of winning the prestigious trophy.

City were handed a tough group last season - having been paired with Borussia Dortmund, Real Madrid and Ajax - but have been given a slightly more appealing draw this season.

Manuel Pellegrini's side have to negotiate a group consisting of last season's Champions League winners Bayern Munich, Viktoria Plzen of the Czech Republic and Russia's CSKA Moscow, and Aguero is confident of his side progressing to the last 16.

"The Champions League sometimes allows semi-surprises," said Aguero.

"Dortmund were finalists last year and Roberto Di Matteo's Chelsea in 2012. They were good teams and tactically well-organised, but were certainly not considered the best at the beginning.

"Now I can only think of Barcelona, as a semi-finalist at least, and then the usual sides - Real, Bayern, United - and ourselves.

"We had only a few experienced players and came up against very tough opponents - Bayern and Napoli - two years ago, then Borussia Dortmund, Real Madrid and Ajax last time, which produced a finalist and semi-finalist.

"We have Bayern again this year, but we also play CSKA and Viktoria. Get past the first stage and, with luck, you can get to the final."

Manchester City open up their third successive Champions League campaign away to Viktoria Plzen on Tuesday before taking on arch-rivals Manchester United next Sunday.
